Dr. Charles Sophy currently serves as Medical Director for the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS), which is responsible for the health, safety and welfare of nearly 40,000 foster children. As measured by the number of children served, Los Angeles’ DCFS is one of the nation’s largest such operations.
Dr. Sophy also has a private psychiatry practice in Beverly Hills, California. Previously he was in private practice in primary care medicine and psychiatry in Fairfield County, Connecticut, and in Palm Springs and Los Angeles, California.
Dr. Sophy has lectured extensively to healthcare professionals, foster parents, medical students and residents, social workers, psychologists and parents, and is an Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California Los Angeles Neuro-Psychiatric Institute. His lectures and teachings are consistently ranked as among the best by those in attendance.
He is the recipient of several awards for excellence in service delivery, including the 2002 National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) Exemplary Psychiatrist Award. He has appeared on various television shows as well as radio talk shows, speaking primarily on health and mental healthcare for child welfare and for the general public.
Dr. Sophy is board-certified in three clinical specialties, including adult psychiatry, child/adolescent psychiatry and family practice.
His professional training includes medical residencies in family practice at Metropolitian Hospital (Philadelphia), and adult psychiatry at Norristown State Hospital, and a fellowship in child/adolescent psychiatry Hahneuman University Hospital ( Philadelphia), as well as, other massive government-run psychiatric institutions around Philadelphia.
